(Tip 1) Choose the right platform
A fairly large number of athletes now have their social media accounts managed by specialist companies.
If you don’t, you’ll probably need to decide which social media platforms to use as more than two at a time can become extremely time consuming and frankly, a chore. For athletes and celebrities, the most popular are Twitter because of the limited character, short post system and Instagram, where pictures and videos are the currency of choice.
(Tip 2) Be You!
Sounds like a line from a cheesy rom-com but it rings true, especially on social media.
Be you.
Be authentic. Trying to be someone else will create unnecessary stress as you attempt to remain in character every time you post. It will just send mixed messages when the real you actually posts and could give the impression to fans that you’re insincere.
(Tip 3) Engage positively with your fans / followers
Fans love to see that you’re reading their messages. They enjoy it even more if you engage directly with them.
That can be in the form of replying to a tweet, liking or re-tweeting messages from fans, a Q & A with fans, a general thank you post to your fans, competitions, or pictures and videos of you meeting and interacting with fans.
Use hashtags that make people feel part of your team, part of your support network, such as the #TeamLH that Lewis Hamilton has branded. It gives you credibility and will breed loyalty and support. Fans will love you even more for it.
