The Ryder Cup is a fantastic TV spectacle, but it also features the most annoying thing on your TV over the weekend. And that is the random and ridiculous chants from the crowd that make absolutely no sense.

The nonsensical  “Mashed Potatoes” shout, straight a drive is even more annoying than the ridiculous “in the hole” comment. After some quick research it was surprising to read that it has the shout has been going on since 2010.

(We could not find a royalty free photo of ‘Mashed Potatoes’ so this one will do instead – it made us smile!)

No one knows really how the “Mashed Potatoes” shout started, but it was made popular by an American who wanted his mom to know he was there. He could not guarantee his mom would see him on camera but promoted, ‘If you hear ‘mashed potatoes’ shouted out loud, you’ll know I was there.

Why ‘Mashed Potatoes’?  Well the answer is because its “nice and quick and means absolutely nothing”, apart from being immensely annoying.

So I am guessing “Mashed Potatoes” in golf is here to stay. There is nothing wrong with some comedy on the fairway, but lets hope someone comes up with something funnier and more relevant soon. Its been 8 years…
